Sisters Rising Graduation

Our mission is to empower and inspire young women who have been involved with the juvenile justice system and/or underground street economy to create positive change in their lives and communities.

The Center for Young Women's Development (CYWD) is one of the first non-profits in the United States run and led entirely by young women.

From the beginning, we have organized young women who were the most marginalized in San Francisco — those in the street economies and the juvenile justice system — to design and deliver peer-to-peer education and support.   READ MORE ABOUT OUR APPROACH

Young Mother's Bill of Rights

Sisters Rising 9 month Program

CYWD recently co-authored Assembly Bill AB 1900 (Skinner-D, Berkeley) which, if passed, will protect the health and safety of incarcerated pregnant women by requiring that state wide standards are established for how they are retrained during transportation to and from state and local correctional facilities. Shackling pregnant women puts their health at risk and restraint policies must be standardized. Currently, nearly two-thirds of county jails shackle pregnant women in ways that could cause miscarriage or other serious injuries. AB 1900 requires the Corrections Standards Authority (CSA) to set standards for how pregnant women are restrained. This will protect financially-strapped counties from being sued and ensure the health and safety of one of our most vulnerable populations.

The bill has passed in the senate.

"I wanted to thank you for sending me the Know Justice Handbook. As a mother who knew little about the juvenile justice system it has helped me understand the meaning of the legal words and the court process. It is very easy to read and understand. I recommend this handbook to everyone."
