Since 2004, after surveying women at the San Francisco Youth Guidance Center regarding the discrimination of young
mothers in custody, we began working with department stakeholders to draft a policy that would outline the rights of
Incarcerated Young Mothers. In 2006, we completed the Incarcerated Young Mother’s Bill of Rights and have received
department support to begin implementation of this document at the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Center.
It’s now 2008. Four long years have gone by but our organizing efforts have been successful. On May 17th we are hosting a
community gathering to celebrate the establishment of the Incarcerated Young Mother’s Bill of rights.
We are bringing the community together to distribute this resource the CYWD has created.
We are inviting supporters to share in the joy we feel reaching this milestone but more so,
we want to express the importance of initiating a campaign now to encourage other institutions to adopt this document.
The day will be full of live performances from local artists, guest speakers and there will be a reading of
the testimonies of young mothers who directly inspired the drafting of the Bill of Rights.
Resource tables will be available so various community partners who offer support services to young mothers,
such as child care, housing and employment, can provide that information directly to attendees who will benefit from it.
